The Mountain R/C Flyers; Some History
The club was started in the middle '70's by Pat Page, Jim Stow, Steve Peery, Don Bennet, and Don Chipman. All these gentellmen lived in the Arnold Ca. area, and our first flying site was the old Blagen Mill pond damn White Pines, Ca. It wasn't the greatest flying site, surrounded by towering Pine trees, heavy snow in the winter, and density altitude issues tn the summer, but it worked. We searched the County (Calaveras) for a more sutible site for our Club. We flew on ranchers pastures, an abandoned airstrip at the County Fairgrounds, the parking lot at the Fairgrounds, and occasinaly on seldom used county roads. On one such day, in 1983, a gentleman interrupted his drive to ask our purpose, after informing him of our intent, he invited us to fly at his private airstrip. Jim Coulter proved to be an avid aviation enthuisist, both model and full scale. He and his son operated two Luscombe Silvairs from their strip. Jim proved to be an excellent and prolific builder, building many airplanes for members too busy to build their own. Over the years we have added the 400' paved runway, a 60'x120' taxyway/pit area, and a 30'x12' open shade structure.
